Why Nihonzo

Learning Japanese is hard enough. Your tools shouldn’t make it harder.

Most learners don’t give up because Japanese is too difficult — they give up because of everything around it. Here’s what usually gets in the way, and how Nihonzo clears it.

An hour of study, twenty minutes of switching apps

You open a Japanese article and hit a word you don't know. Switch to the dictionary, then to Google for the grammar, then a notification pulls you away. By the time you're back, you've lost the sentence — and the mood.

Everything on one screen

Read, look up and ask AI without leaving the page. Long-press any word to see what it means, or ask the AI tutor what the whole sentence is really saying — then keep reading.

Everything on one screen

You have spare minutes, but your textbook is at home

Your study time comes in pieces: the bus ride, the lunch queue, ten minutes before bed. A heavy textbook and a notebook don't fit into those moments, so they pass without any Japanese.

Your textbook, in your pocket

Grammar from N5 to N1, organised by JLPT level and by the books you already use (Shinkanzen, So-matome), plus a daily plan in short sessions. Open the app and carry on where you stopped — core lessons work offline too.

Your textbook, in your pocket

Real Japanese is full of words you don't know yet

You want to read real news, not textbook dialogues. But every line has a few unknown words, each one another lookup, and by the fifth paragraph you give up.

Read at your level, look up in one tap

Nihonzo ranks articles by how much of them you already understand, so you start with ones you can actually finish. An unknown word is one long-press away, and the AI tutor is there when a sentence still doesn't make sense.

The videos you love are too fast to learn from

You pause, rewind, squint at the captions, and still can't tell where one word ends and the next begins — let alone why the grammar works that way.

Any video, turned into a lesson

Paste a YouTube link and AI turns the Japanese captions into a line-by-line lesson: reading, translation and grammar notes, synced to the video so you can follow every line.

You can read Japanese, but you freeze when you speak

There's no one to practise with, and saying lines to yourself gives you no feedback. You can't tell whether what came out was even close, so you stay quiet.

Speak your part in real conversations

Role-play everyday conversations and say your lines out loud. Nihonzo shows what it heard and how closely it matches the line, so you can see which words didn't come through, try again, or move on to the next line.

Speak your part in real conversations

You learn it today and forget it next week

Without a plan you keep re-studying what you already know and miss what you're about to forget. Progress feels slow, and motivation fades with it.

A plan that remembers for you

Set your JLPT level and exam date. Spaced repetition brings each word and grammar point back just before you'd forget it, so every day you know exactly what to study.

Frequently asked questions

How do the AI features work? Do I pay extra?

Nihonzo connects to the AI provider you choose — OpenAI, Google Gemini or DeepSeek — using your own API key, which you enter once in Settings. The app includes step-by-step instructions for getting a key. Any usage is billed by that provider directly to you (some providers offer a free tier). Your key and your questions go straight from your phone to the provider; they never pass through our servers.

Which news sites can I read?

NHK News Web Easy, NHK, Asahi, Yahoo! News Japan and livedoor are built in, and you can add any Japanese website you like. Articles open in the app's reader, where you can long-press any word to look it up or ask AI about it.

Can I use any YouTube video?

Any video that has Japanese captions. Paste the link, and AI builds a line-by-line lesson from the captions. The lesson is saved on your phone for rewatching.

I changed phones. How do I get my purchase back?

Install the app on the new phone, open the purchase screen and tap “Restore purchases” while signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account you bought with. Your study progress can be moved with Settings → Backup & restore.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases made in the App Store or Google Play are refunded by Apple or Google under their refund policies.

Do I need an internet connection?

Grammar, vocabulary, kanji, conversations, tests and your progress all work offline. News, YouTube lessons and AI features need a connection.

How do I delete my data?
